Hearst Scholarships Awarded to ASPIRE Students with the Highest Grades

Congratulations to Sharline Derosier and Rachelle Bull, 2011-12 recipients of  Hearst Scholarships.  These awards are reserved for the two senior education majors who have been active in ASPIRE and who have cumulative grade records of 3.5 or higher.

Sharline is an Elementary Education major who started her undergraduate program in the Georgetown Professional Development component of our teacher education degree option.  She began her ASPIRE career in 2010, as an undergraduate student leader with the Summer Internship program for high school students in Southern Delaware. She assisted Deanne McCredie in working with high school students who were assigned as classroom assistants in the Friends Afterschool in Milton summer enrichment program.  In 2011, Sharline started research on student teaching through the McNair Scholars program.

Rachelle will complete her degree in Secondary Math Education.  She has been actively involved in ASPIRE’s outreach work through Operation CARE.  This past summer (2011), she began research on changes in middle school students’ awareness of college and their interest in planning for college careers, given opportunities to participate in college awareness workshops.  Her summer 2011 research was conducted with support from the Undergraduate Student Fellows program in the Office of Undergraduate Research and Experiential Learning.  She has also been on the University’s Honor Roll each semester of her undergraduate career–way to go Rachelle!!!
