ASPIRE Director, Melva Ware, was recognized on Saturday, November 12, 2011 by the Delaware Chapter of 100 Black Women, Inc.  Dr. Ware received an award as the Peoples Choice, given a letter writing campaign mounted by ASPIRE leaders which resulted in Ware receiving more nomination letters for an award than any of the other awardees.  The day-long networking summit was titled, My Sister’s Keeper, and it was organized to explore issues that relate to the health, education and welfare of African American women and families in Delaware.  The awards ceremony took place during a luncheon attended by about 300 people to celebrate the achievements of “unsong sheroes” who have made a positive difference in the lives of girls and families.    Ware noted during brief remarks that she was most pleased by the opportunity to introduce the community to folks in several organizations, including ASPIRE, Learning Link of Delaware and Minorities Achieving Collegiate Success.  Ware noted further that these folks are involved in efforts to engage students and families in planning for college and are waging a battle to overcome low expectations that are visible in the acceptance by too many students of mediocre grades.  Ware suggested that the whole community must agree to challenge low expectations.
